Are You a Messy Or Neat Writer?


Below is the actual picture of my tube of toothpaste and my husband’s tube of toothpaste. Which one is which?

Before I tell you the answer….have you made your decision?

I’m on the left. Husband is on the right.

Which one of us is doing it right?

It doesn’t matter, does it? We both get the job done. We both get toothpaste when we want it, right?

So why did I do this? What does this have to do with writing?


There is no right or wrong way to write your book. I write messy. I don’t plan. I have to go back sometimes and add elements that I need in the story down the line. I have to edit as I go. I change my character names in mid-stream. And yet, I get to the end. I have a book when I’m done.

On the other hand, I “hear” there are writers who plot the entire book. They outline their chapters. They writer character guides. They set off on their story knowing exactly where they are headed. And they don’t edit as they go. At the end of the first draft, they go back and then edit.

Are they better writers than I am?

I don’t think so. I KNOW there isn’t a right way to write a book. It can be as messy as cotton candy or as neat as a starched shirt. The key is…
