Video Alternatives to the Book Trailer by Brinda Berry

I’m a fan of the book trailer. Anyone who knows me can attest to the fact that I enjoy making and viewing them. The big question is whether or not it actually helps to market a book. It’s tough to gather stats about marketing and determine exactly what works. I believe exposure is key.

When using video as your marketing media, it helps to be original, charismatic, personable. That’s quite a tall order for the author who sometimes just wants to write. Here are some ideas for going outside the box with video if the book trailer just isn’t your thing.

1. Do an excerpt reading of your release or ask a fan to do the reading.

2. Ask your cover model to video a “hello” from the book’s character…because HELLO! We all love pretending the cover person is the character.

3. Hold a contest and let fans submit their promo videos of your book.

4. Allow someone to interview you about your book.

5. Talk with a friend on-screen about your book (characters, theme, plot, fun moments).

For fun, I recently asked an attendee of a book signing to read the first page of Sandi Beth Jones’ book, Byronic. The young fan did an awesome job of reading, and you could tell that she really got into the book! I loved it.

Have you tried any of the above? Have any more suggestions to add to my list?
